Welcome to Woodrow Retirement Home
This Service User Guide provides information about life at Woodrow Retirement Home and explains the care and support we provide. It reflects our Statement of Purpose and our commitment to delivering safe, person-centred care that promotes dignity, independence and wellbeing.
About the Service
Woodrow Retirement Home is registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide 24-hour residential care for older people whose assessed needs can be safely and effectively met within a residential care setting. The home provides long-term residential care, short-term convalescence and respite stays. Woodrow does not provide nursing care.
Our Aims and Values
Our aim is to provide a safe, caring and homely environment where residents are treated with respect, kindness and compassion. Care is delivered in a way that promotes dignity, privacy, independence, choice, safety, equality, diversity and fulfilment.
Person-Centred Care
Residents are supported as individuals. Care plans are developed with residents and, where appropriate, their families and professionals. Care plans reflect personal history, preferences, routines and changing needs, and are reviewed regularly.
Management and Leadership
Peter Edwards is the Registered Manager of Woodrow Retirement Home and has owned and operated the service since 1979. He provides overall leadership, governance and regulatory oversight to ensure the home delivers safe, effective and high-quality care in line with Care Quality Commission requirements.
He is supported by the Deputy Manager, Anne-Marie Worth, who manages the home on a day-to-day basis. Anne-Marie is currently undertaking the NVQ Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management for Adult Care and is working towards registering as Manager in the future.
Anne-Marie began her journey in the care sector as a Care Assistant and has since gained experience working as an Administration Assistant, Head Housekeeper and Activities Coordinator. This breadth of experience supports a holistic understanding of care, the running of the home and the importance of meaningful daily life for residents.
Staffing and Support
The home is staffed 24 hours a day by trained care staff, with management support available at all times. Staffing levels and skill mix are reviewed regularly to ensure residents receive safe and effective care.
The Home and Facilities
The home provides single bedrooms, many with en-suite facilities. Communal lounge and dining areas are available. All bedrooms are fitted with call bell systems and secure storage is provided for personal belongings. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms.
Meals and Nutrition
Nutritious meals and refreshments are provided daily, taking into account individual dietary needs, preferences and cultural requirements. Special diets and modified textures are provided where required.
Where residents have swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), meals and drinks are provided in line with individual care plans, risk assessments and professional guidance, including modified food textures and thickened fluids where required.
Visitor Food and Choking Risk
To protect residents from the risk of choking and to support individual dietary and swallowing needs, families and visitors are kindly asked not to offer food, sweets or drinks unless this has been discussed and agreed with staff. Please speak with the Manager or Head of Care for guidance.
Smoking Policy
Woodrow Retirement Home operates a smoke-free building. Smoking is permitted only in the designated external smoking area.
Visitors and Contact
Residents are encouraged to maintain contact with family and friends. Visitors are welcome and privacy is respected. Residents may choose who they wish to see and when.
Safety and Wellbeing
The home has safeguarding procedures in place to protect residents from abuse, harm and neglect. Fire safety systems are maintained and staff are trained to respond to emergencies.
Any accidents, incidents, safeguarding concerns or significant changes in a resident’s condition are recorded, reviewed and acted upon to reduce future risk, improve safety and inform ongoing care planning.
Religion and Beliefs
Residents are supported to practise their religion or beliefs and may meet clergy of their choice. A private space can be made available if required.
Raising Concerns and Complaints
Residents and their representatives are encouraged to raise concerns or complaints. Complaints are listened to and responded to promptly in line with our complaints procedure. Making a complaint will not negatively affect care.
